Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to pay to participate?
No. Conference participation costs are covered by the College of Global Engagement.
Can I do this while having a part-time job?
Yes. Many students who participate have part-time jobs. Preparation includes scheduled sessions and assigned tasks, but the format is manageable. Meeting times and formats, such as online sessions, are coordinated with the group, taking into account classes, part-time work, and other responsibilities. Students should consider their availability before applying, but having a part-time job does not prevent them from participating.
What will preparation look like?
Preparation sessions are not lecture-heavy. They balance: - learning about global issues related to the conference theme - understanding your assigned country and role - practicing discussion and speaking in English Sessions include short explanations, guided activities, and structured practice. The focus is on participation and gradual progress rather than performance.
What will my schedule look like?
After selection, students attend an initial meeting to review expectations and meet other delegates. Preparation runs from late April to July. Students typically meet once every two weeks, with adjustments during exam periods. Additional longer sessions may take place before the July conference. A clear schedule with tasks and deadlines is shared in advance. Exact timing is coordinated with students to ensure preparation remains manageable alongside other commitments.
What if I cannot attend a preparation session?
Occasional conflicts may arise due to academic or personal responsibilities. Regular participation is expected, but communication is important. Meeting formats are flexible where possible.
Do I need to already know about Model United Nations, the UN, or politics?
No. You do not need prior experience with Model United Nations, the United Nations, or political studies. Preparation sessions introduce the necessary background and expectations.
Will this affect my grades, GPA, or study abroad plans?
No. This initiative is not a graded course and does not affect your GPA. Preparation concludes in July following the conference. Any reflection activities are completed electronically, so students do not need to remain on campus afterward. Where applicable, students may apply for Experiential Learning credit in accordance with university regulations.
How many students can participate?
The number of places is limited to ensure adequate preparation and guidance. If applications exceed available places, selection is based on availability, commitment, and the overall quality of the application.
Do I need a high level of English?
No. No specific English test score is required. Preparation includes structured opportunities to practice speaking in a supportive academic environment. Students are not expected to be confident from the beginning.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. Student delegates receive an official conference participation certificate from the conference organizers. Some delegates choose to include this type of academic activity in their personal records or CVs, depending on their goals.
What is included during the conference?
